Liaozhai Productions creates encounters with the extraordinary through magic and physical performance. We explore the strange within the familiar, bringing moments of everyday wonder to the stage and opening space for audiences to sense, imagine, and discover.

Our name, 寥齋 (Liaozhai), evokes spaciousness, stillness, and room left open. Spoken aloud, it echoes 聊齋, the name associated with Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. Drawing on its spirit of gathering strange tales, we imagine the theatre as a place where the uncanny is not merely told, but experienced.

For us, stillness does not mean the absence of sound. It means leaving some things unsaid—allowing phenomena to unfold before explanation, without fixing their meaning in advance. Through the interplay of sound, movement, objects, and illusion, we invite audiences to question what they perceive and find their own ways into the work.

We aspire to create a contemporary, theatrical collection of strange tales: finding magic in everyday life and transforming it into shared encounters with the unexpected.
